names on social media

Social media is the latest evolution of Internet communication. Incorporating links, text, photos, videos and other media, social media sites allow people to connect more easily than ever before and share content in new ways. This ever-evolving group of sites includes social networks, blogs, photo-sharing sites, status-based communications, professional networking, and social bookmarking.

For businesses, social media provides an excellent conduit for communication and engagement with customers and potential customers. Many applications exist to make the most out of social media sites, including search platforms. It is important to monitor your online identity, particularly on social media networks, which have a much shorter news cycle than traditional media.

Because of the immense popularity of social media networks, many usernames, or custom vanity URLs have already been taken (e.g. twitter.com/adidas or facebook.com/starbucks). Whether you intend to maintain a presence on social media or not, you should at least register your own username to ensure that no one else is using it to broadcast messages that could be harmful to your reputation.
